Number of Pages: 178 Rating: 4 Who would you recommend this book to? Mary Green What did you like most about this book? It was a good book. It held my attention, but sometimes it had a lot going on. What did you like least about this book? I couldn't stand the lead character, Sharise. She was really naive and stupid at times. People allowed her to get away with too much. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? No. What was your overall impression of this book? My overall impression of the book was it was well written and it kept my attention. The characters were all intriguing and had their own situations and drama to deal with. The situations were relatable and I felt myself being drawn in by all that happened. Given that I enjoyed this story, I would read another novel by her. The only thing that I wanted was for the lead character to have learned a lesson from all the mayhem she caused, but that was just my hope. It's not something the author had to do. Just my suggestion. Reviewed by: Tramaine Green

The courage of the author to put her personal life on paper for anyone to read. What did you like least about this book? The sadness of the poetry. What was your overall impression of this book? (Response must be between 75-100 words) I found it difficult to connect with the poetry because some of it was painful. Poetry is someone’s personal journey through life. If shared with others, poetry can give us only a glimpse of their joy or pain. The author gave her view on life, love, and relationships. Our lives don't always follow a smooth path and she showed us some of the rough paths that we can take to still move forward. I must commend her for her courage to share her life with us. Her debut book, The Absolution of Zero is a familiar story told in an unusual kind of way. Although I wasn’t impressed too much by the cover or the title, the way the author lays out the story and breathes life into the characters by giving them a distinct voice of their own will keep readers turning the pages. What I love the most about this book, that’s rarely seen in first person narrative fiction novels is the author’s ability to connect with the readers through the transparency and genuineness of the characters. It’s a story that stimulates the mind and captures the soul. I’ve already told family and friends about it and will be on the lookout for more great books by Meleisa Betts. Rating: 5 stars The story was an interesting read, but just a little short on character development. The story opens with Zena packing Malik’s stuff to give him his walking papers. I felt like something was missing and the grammatical errors threw me. When I read a short story, I like to be able to say that I’ve got the whole story. Book Title: A Woman Scorned by T.P. The fact that Zena moved on from Malik and did not fall back into the same ole same with a man. What did you like least about this book? Too many grammatical errors. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? More character development Reviewed by: M. Bullocks Overall I felt that this book was a very good read. When Sammie began telling her story, I expected the bad, but the things that the author revealed through Sammie were very shocking. Her childhood was stolen from her and she was manipulated by her "Daddy," whom she cherished above all things. Her grandmother was pure evil and even though she had her reasons, it didn't justify the things she did to Sammie. Sammie let her demons take her to a place that no child should have to go, but considering the circumstances and everything she went through, it's no wonder she didn't turn out even worse. I think she could have been saved, but she always put her dad above all else and he turned out to be her biggest demise. As I was reading the book I began to get disappointed. The main character, P.I Dominic Law, you do not get to feel the character out and get a true connection with him. I would have liked more detail on the cases. I suggest, author Shakir Rashaan focus on writing the story rather than giving the readers a glimpse of BDSM when it’s a mystery. Number of Pages: 302 Rating: 2 Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction What did you like most about this book? It was very different from most books I read and it reminded me of many crime sitcoms I watch on TV such as Law and Order SVU. What did you like least about this book? The book did not spend a lot of time focusing on the crimes. I was confused when P.I Dominic Law was on a case and then an interruption of the BDSM. There were many details about bondage and sadomasochism which did not pertain to the crime cases. I was looking for more information revolving the cases and the serial killer. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? More suspense, more mystery centered about the cases as opposed to the BDSM breaks between each one. Reviewed by: Nadia McAllister ************************************* Initially I wanted to score "The Arrangement" a tad bit lower, due mainly to the lack of believability. I then realized there was something that made me continue reading. As an avid book reader and reviewer I would have purchased the book because the title peeked my interest. However, I would be leery about additional purchases. My overall impression is that it's a good book. Book Title: The Arrangement Number of Pages: 418 Rating: 3 Fiction/Non-Fiction: Fiction Who would you recommend this book to? Young adults who enjoy urban fiction. What did you like most about this book? What I liked most was the language was extremely simple and easy to follow. My overall point of view is that it was entertaining. The book moves at a relaxing pace and at times is absorbing. You have no time to be bored because there is always something going on. What did you like least about this book? What I disliked was that much of the book was not believable at all. There were too many extreme twists and turns, and too many spoilers. The characters were not well developed. Example being Teyah & Terrance Jr. It was not enough character development to feel emotionally attached or feel a sense of sadness for them. Any suggestions for how this book could have been better? The author has great potential. My suggestions would be to cut down on the amount of characters in a novel. Even an avid reader will get overwhelmed with trying to bond with so many characters. Use your twists and spoilers sparingly and blow us away all of sudden. Take some of the characters in "The Arrangement" and expand on them in a second book. Reviewed by: Tonya Dallas |
